WCAG Accessibility Scanner

Adds an Accessibility panel to the Elementor editor that checks the page against WCAG 2.2 A and AA as you edit (bundled axe-core plus LandTech checks): missing alt text, low contrast, skipped heading levels, unnamed buttons and links, vague link text, unlabelled form fields, video captions, a missing skip link and removed focus outlines. Most problems have a one-click fix: Fix with AI (or type) for alt text saved to the Media Library, screen-reader names and form labels; Apply for heading tags and suggested text colors; site-wide skip link and focus outline. Fix all with AI queues the safe fixes. Scores and a CSV export per page; Elementor Extras → All Tools → Accessibility lists every checked page.

Where Elementor editor → Accessibility tab on the right edge of the screen. Elementor Extras → All Tools → Accessibility lists every checked page with its score and holds the site-wide settings. The admin bar shows the last score of the page you are viewing.

How to use it

  1. Turn on "Platform: WCAG Accessibility Scanner" under Settings → Add-on features.
  2. Edit a page with Elementor and click the Accessibility tab. The page is checked against WCAG 2.2 A and AA, and checked again a moment after each change while "Re-check as I edit" is on.
  3. Read the score and the result: "Passes the automated WCAG 2.2 AA checks", "Passes Level A; some AA checks fail" or "Some Level A checks fail". Problems are grouped as Critical, Serious, Moderate and Minor; each one links to the WCAG explanation.
  4. Click Select to outline the element in the preview and open its settings. Where a fix is offered, use it: type alt text or click "Fix with AI" to generate and save it to the Media Library, choose the right heading tag, add a screen-reader name (or "Fix with AI") to an icon link or a vague "Read more" link, or add a missing form field label.
  5. For low contrast, click Apply color on widgets we can write to (headings, text, buttons). Copy color remains if the widget is not in that list, or if you prefer to set a global color.
  6. Fix all with AI walks the page: skip link and focus outlines first (administrators), then headings, contrast, alt text, names and labels. Video captions stay manual. You can undo widget edits; alt text is saved to the Media Library.
  7. Administrators can fix two site-wide problems in one click: add a "Skip to content" link to every page, and restore visible focus outlines when the theme removes them.
  8. Click Update to publish widget fixes, then Export CSV to hand the remaining list to a developer or keep it as a record.

Notes

  • Automated checks find many but not all WCAG problems. Also try the page with only a keyboard (Tab, Shift+Tab, Enter, Esc) and with a screen reader before calling it accessible.
  • Problems from the header, footer, a template or a global widget appear under "Elsewhere on the site"; fix them in that template.
  • Widget fixes made in the editor can be undone with Ctrl/Cmd+Z. Alt text is saved to the Media Library, so it applies everywhere the image is used. Image widgets without Media Library alt text print an empty alt, which tells screen readers the image is decoration; add alt text unless it is.
  • The checker (axe-core) is loaded only into the editor preview; visitors never download it. Checking a page from All Tools → Accessibility runs the LandTech checks on the saved page on the server (contrast needs the editor, because it needs the browser's rendering).
  • The skip link goes to the element set under All Tools → Accessibility (#content by default) and falls back to the page's main area. Themes must call wp_body_open, which current themes do.
  • Developers: GET/POST /wp-json/landtech-extras/v1/accessibility/scan?page_id=ID reads or runs a check, POST …/accessibility/fix applies a fix, POST …/accessibility/suggest-alt and …/suggest-fix return AI text without writing widget settings; all need edit rights on the page. Filters landtech_extras/accessibility/vague_link_texts, landtech_extras/accessibility/heading_settings, landtech_extras/accessibility/link_settings and landtech_extras/accessibility/color_settings; window.landtechExtrasA11yPanel.open() opens the panel.
